World Pipe Band Championship, Glasgow, Scotland 2008
400 Tactical Helicopter Squadron holds the honour of being the senior squadron in the Canadian Air Force. Formed in 1932, it is now in its 77th year. The current format of the Pipes and Drums had its beginnings in 1947. This year marks the 66th anniversary of the development and adoption of the Royal Canadian Air Force tartan, the unique blue tartan of the 400 THS Pipes and Drums. 2009 also marks the 85th anniversary of the RCAF and the 100th anniversary of powered flight in Canada.
The 400 THS Pipes and Drums are former Canadian and North American champions and have held the Champion Supreme title several times, winning it once again in 2008. They are currently competing in Grade 3.
Apart from its busy competition schedule, the band performs frequently at shows here in Canada and the U.S. They were featured at the Kingston Heritage Tattoo in 1999 celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the RCAF and performed in 1999, 2000 and 2006 at the Longs Peak Scottish and Irish Festival in Estes Park, Colorado. The band performed in the International Military Music Festival in Quebec City in 2004, and in 2005 played before almost 60,000 at Skydome (Rogers Centre), believed to be the largest crowd to ever hear a single Pipe Band. Recently, a contingent of band members was sent to New York City as part of a combined Canadian Forces Pipe Band. This band participated in the Tartan Day parade, the largest gathering of Pipers and Drummers in history. The band also performs each year at the Royal Canadian Military Institute concert at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, the Battle of Britain Parade, as well as playing at various events for the Air Force throughout the year.
